Bonus Poker by Microgaming

When you’ve been around for as long as Microgaming has, it is no surprise that there comes a point where there aren’t any traditional, land based video poker games left to bring online. However, with it being one of their best performing game categories, they’re always looking to expand it and they took matters into their own hands on that note by deciding to come up with their own slight twists on traditional action. One of the first of these games to hit our screens, and one that remains popular to this day, is Bonus Poker.

At first glance, the game looks much the same as any of Microgaming’s other video poker titles from Jacks or Better upwards, although we’d put this down to a case of not fixing something that isn’t broken. The familiar blue backdrop and ever present pay table are surrounded by cards and controls which perhaps don’t look all that spectacular when measured against the likes of NetEnt’s video poker games, but are most definitely functional.

More than just Jacks or Better

The fact that the design of Microgaming video poker games is so uniform means that, at first glance, this might look no different to Jacks or Better. There are no wild cards and no overly special features to set it apart, but where it really does stand out is on the pay table. The ‘bonus’ of the name comes from the fact that players can effectively sacrifice lesser wins in order to receive larger returns on better hands. The most obvious example of this is the fact that pay outs don’t commence until you’ve broken at least the two pairs barrier, but it is when you reach the four of a kind area of the table that things start to become crystal clear.

A regular four of a kind hand pays out with a 25 times multiplier and slots in just below a straight flush, which is all pretty standard. However, if those four cards happen to be aces, twos, threes or fours then you’re in for an additional bonus treat. The aces are at the top of this segment, beaten only by a royal flush, and you’ll scoop eighty times your bet for landing it. The lower cards are no slouches either, coming in at a forty times multiplier, which is only ten times less than the aforementioned straight flush.

Bonus Poker is ideally suited to any player that is comfortable with games like Jacks or Better and fancies something a little different without involving wild cards and other potential features. If that sounds like you, be sure to check out everything that this great Microgaming title has to offer at the top of the page.
