Retro Reels by Microgaming
One series that we’re particularly fond of here at PLG is Microgaming’s Retro Reels range of games and today is our chance to dust off the title that started it all. For many players, Retro Reels is not only the original game but also the best, with the sequels such as Retro Reels – Extreme Heat and Retro – Reels Diamond Glitz adding in different aesthetics. If you’re a purist, then you’ll definitely appreciate the way that the fruits, sevens, bars, bells and other symbols haven’t been tampered with and they look exactly the same as they used to on all of the popular pub fruit machines.
Indeed, the game has been designed to look like a fruit machine rather than a regular slot and it all adds to the atmosphere that does an excellent job of making a traditional theme mesh with modern gameplay. That’s thanks to five reels and even bonus rounds, and you wouldn’t find many of them on the old one-armed bandits!
Respins on the Base Game
The main goal in the regular game remains the same as always, as you look to line up matching symbols across the various win lines on the game. There’s every chance that you’ll get close to a big win, but not quite close enough and this is where the base game respin feature comes into play. In the same way as on the other Retro Reels games and other Microgaming titles such as Hot Ink, players have full control over spinning individual reels in the hope of improving their board. However, it is not as simple as it might sound, as the game calculates a cost for every respin, reflecting just how likely it is that the board improves. You can aim for an additional symbol to complete a win, or even take a shot at landing additional scatter symbols as part of your quest to enter the bonus round!
Retro Reels Free Spins
On any retro game, any additional feature is a welcome addition, even if it is perhaps the most traditional bonus round that you’ll have ever seen. It’s simply enough, as you’ll be looking to land three or more of the free spins scatters and, as noted, you might aim to do so using the respin features if things aren’t going the right way on their own. Each qualifying symbol is worth five free games in its own right, so if you trigger the feature with just three symbols, you’ll get fifteen free games which is still nothing to moan about. Up that to four or five scatters and you’ll receive twenty or 25 free games respectively.
As you can probably tell, Retro Reels has its roots firmly in the older, classic fruit machines when it comes to looks, but the modern twists such as the additional reels and free spins bonus do of course make it a thoroughly modern contender. It’s the kind of game that some players will love and others will not be all that keen on, but you can see how you feel with no risk at all by playing right here on this page for free, or heading to one of the casinos featured in the sidebar for the best in real money action.
