Spartacus by WMS

As you’ll know if you’ve played the excellent range of Zeus online slots from WMS, the developer has something of a passion for ancient history, something that has inspired plenty of top notch titles over the years. That passion shows no signs of abating as many of their recent releases continue to keep the genre alive, with Spartacus – Gladiator of Rome being the perfect example. In all fairness, history is the perfect choice for slots developers as there are thousands of familiar characters that can inspire the gaming action, all without the need for a license!

In this particular case, the theme is everything that you would hope for. Gladiators battled others with the same job and lions in the coliseum and you’ll encounter just about all of them on the board, alongside the widely used playing card suit symbols. Spartacus is suitably important too as he serves not only as a wild card, but also as a stacked on. However, you’ll be encountering more of each of these symbols on each spin than you might be expecting, thanks to the main, board based special feature.

Colossal Reels

One board layout that you won’t find on games by anyone other than WMS is Colossal Reels and this is one of the best implementations of the idea that we’ve seen so far. There are effectively two different boards in play, with the smaller of the two being what you’d expect from any regular forty line game with five reels and four rows. To the right of this board are the Colossal Reels themselves, which are twelve tiles high and a further five reels wide and while they don’t interact directly in a manner that would lead to landing ten of a kind, they certainly have an influence on each other.

That influence is based around Spartacus who, as we already know, is the wild symbol on his own game and can come in stacks. If a full stack, depicting the entire character at once, lands on a reel on the main board, the corresponding Colossal Reel will also turn completely wild too.

Colosseum Scatters lead to Free Spins

The Colosseum is not only the destination for the best gladiatorial action, but also the most important symbol on Spartacus. It only lands on reels one, three and five, but does so independently on each game board so that there is definitely the possibility to hit more than three – with rewards getting bigger if you manage to do so.

Three scatters lead to the most basic free spins round, with eight spins awarded and double your total stake awarded as an instant prize. Manage to land four scatters and that will make for twelve free spins and five times your total bet. Finally, all five scatters will award a tasty twenty free spins and then whet your appetite even further with twenty times your total bet before the reels even start spinning.

When they do start, you’re in for even more treats as the Spartacus wild card becomes more powerful than ever before. If he only partially lands on a reel on the main board, he’ll automatically nudge into place to cover it fully, before continuing his trick from the base game and transferring his wild ways to the respective Colossal Reel for massive wins. Throw in the fact that you can win even more spins with further scatter combinations within the round and you’ll be able to see exactly why it is so rewarding!
